You heard it here first, Counter-Strike: Source is finally getting a sequel.

A Steam page has gone up for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, with only just a picture of a police guy with a sniper rifle. Yeah, looks like Counter-Strike alright.

The Steam page (which can be found here), gives a hefty description of the game, saying that it will include brand new maps, characters, weapons, and updated versions of map favorites like de_dust, cs_office, etc. Matchmaking, new gameplay modes, and leaderboards are also mentioned.

Doug Lombardi had this to say about CS:GO and Counter-Strike in general:

“Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999. For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS’ award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac.”

A Counter-Strike for consoles? Not unheard of, since a version of Counter-Strike was put out on Xbox, but I’m curious to see how Valve are going to make Counter-Strike work for console players.

CS:GO is being developed by Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment, and the game should see release in early 2012 (not counting Valve Time of course). CS:GO will also be made playable at this year’s PAX and Eurogamer Expo.

I guess we’ll never see Half-Life 3 then.
